Infarction of the medulla and cervical cord after fitness exercises.

چکیده

The clinical association of a left lateral medullary syndrome with left corticospinal and posterior column deficits is reported in the case of a young woman with a left vertebral artery dissection. The signs are explicable on the basis of occlusion of branches of the vertebral artery to both the upper cervical cord and the medulla. The dissection may have been due to sustained rotation of the neck during fitness classes. In view of the undocumented benefits and the potential unwanted effects of this exercise, it is doubtful whether it should be recommended.

Spinal cord infarction and tetraplegia--rare complications of meningococcal meningitis.

A previously healthy 25-yr-old female developed flaccid areflexic tetraplegia, with intact cranial nerve function, 36 h after the diagnosis of bacterial meningitis. Polymerase chain reaction studies of cerebrospinal fluid and blood were positive for Neisseria meningitidis, serogroup B. Magnetic resonance of the cervicothoracic spine revealed increased signal intensity and expansion in the lower...

LOTUS overexpression accelerates neuronal plasticity after focal brain ischemia in mice

Nogo receptor-1 (NgR1) and its ligands inhibit neuronal plasticity and limit functional recovery after brain damage such as ischemic stroke. We have previously shown that lateral olfactory tract usher substance (LOTUS) antagonizes NgR1-mediated signaling. Here, we investigated whether LOTUS enhances neuronal plasticity and functional recovery after brain focal ischemia in adult mice. Focal isch...

Short Communications Medial Medullary Infarction from Fibrocartilaginous Embolism to the Anterior Spinal Artery

A previously healthy young woman presented with sudden onset of quadriplegia, anesthesia below the C3 dermatome, respiratory paralysis, vertical nystagmus, ocular bobbing and cortical blindness. After partial resolution of the latter deficits, she remained quadriplegic, with a C3 level of anesthesia, and in respiratory paralysis until death from complications of a fulminant pulmonary infection....

Examination of spinal cord in diseases of the craniocervical junction and high cervical spine.

A simple necropsy technique for the removal of the craniocervical junction was devised: a relatively small specimen comprising part of the clivus, the foramen magnum, and cervical vertebral canal is removed in one piece with the medulla and spinal cord inside, and examined systematically after fixation. This method, used in a series of patients with chronic craniocervical instability, allows bo...
